"Who is Devra Bogdanovich running from really?"-Part 6 in my ongoing series investigating the questions posed by flint dille on signed copies of Tycho C.'s Ingress Origins.
I have interpreted this question as referring to what has motivated Devra to leave/flee/escape the Niantic Project at CERN. Other readings are possible as it could be argued that Devra continued running long after she escaped Niantic: she ran from Visur Technology and perhaps kept running. I am, as always, eager to hear other interpretations, perspectives, and views. That's why I always leave " Other" as an option.
Perhaps the most straightforward interpretation is that Devra is simply the most extreme case of "resistance syndrome", the effect of increased fear and paranoia induced by exposure to xm in approximately 50% of subjects. If we imagine this as a spectrum, Devra is perhaps the most negatively affected sensitive at Niantic. Her behaviour is a symptom of xm exposure.
In terms of fleeing Niantic, Devra's departure was clearly preceded by Devra's discussion with Oliver Lynton-Wolfe. Devra was clearly very unsettled to see the cavalier attitude of Oliver to researcher/test subject safety. In particular, she was outraged that OLW was exposing the researchers, and the public, with increased doses of exotic matter.
Alternatively, I wonder if Devra didn't trust herself. Her preoccupation with safety and caution culminated in the portal virus. Additionally, her determined pursuit of a dangerous vaccine to forcibly inoculate the public against xm despite a very high projected mortality rate would surely have her CDC colleagues bewildered that she would even consider such an approach. Caution is one thing, but even many former supporters of Devra felt forced to admit she had taken things way too far. Perhaps Devra didn't trust herself to use xm responsibly, having crossed an ethical line in past research. Perhaps she was scared of some enhanced abilities that she was developing. In other words, Devra was/is running from herself.
Only Devra Bogdanovich can truly answer this question of course. I'm sure there are others who could add some perspective, especially Hank Johnson, Oliver Lynton-Wolfe, Edgar Allan Wright and perhaps H. Richard Loeb.
I'm including the links to the first five questions below. If you haven't already, please have a look, vote and comment. I'm hoping this is an easy way to engage with these questions and make engaging more accessible. I very much look forward to reading your thoughts and seeing the distribution of views.
