Few, incomplete thoughts or maybe, a theory about XM and Shaper have been cought me for some time and I would like to share with you.
Have you read the Childhood's End by Arthur Clarke? It is the first successful Si-Fi novel of him and considered as his best work. There is a interesting comparison between them. I'm not going to expand the detail of the story but there may still unavoidable contain lots of spoilers of it so DO think carefully before you continue to read if you have not read the book yet because it is TRULY a masterpiece.
(You can also see the briefs in the Wikipedia page of the book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childhood%27s_End )
So let's begin.
There are some factors in the Childhood's End :
#1 The main theme of the story is about the evolution of humanity.
#2 There is a guide to help human archieve the evolution.
#3 The guide in the story lies behind shadow (or hold secrets to the evolution thing) because they have their own schedual and they think human have not prepared to that yet.
#4 The guide in the story have had their attempts to contact human in early civilization, but they failed.
#5 The human race in the story belongs to the ultimate community according to the guide.
#6 The entity of the ultimate community is more like spiritual than material.
#7 There are rebels that fight against the actually leadership of the guide in the first stage of the story, and they hold the belief that human should decide their destiny by their own hands, but the guide is patient and tolerant to the resist acts.
#8 The evolution start in the next generation of human, acquiring the so called psychic power in their childhood, then have telepathy to eaxh other. Next, fully meditaionalized. Finally, fulfilled and become one united entity.
#9 The guide is actually not belongs to the ultimate community, but they are continuing trying to understand it by studying the Mythology and other paraphysics written by ancient human.
Feel familiar with that, right? Yes, in the story of Ingress, we are surprised to find there are lots of settings that similar to what in the Childhood's End and more or less we can find clues appearing in documents and dialogues between characters in video and audio materials released by Niantic Project so far. ( I'm not going to unfold one by one as for the concision of text.) So I think when the storywirters were creating the world of Ingress, they might saw this book as a major reference. If not, then I may say the great mind thinks alike. No matter which situation it is, we could use this book to do some analyses or predictions towards XM and Shaper.
So, according to the similar factors mentioned above, it can be possibly inferred the role that XM and Shaper played in this Ingress story:
What if...
#1 XM itself is the entity of the ultimate community, that's why it can help (or have influence to) unlock the psychic power of human, and that's why Jarvis has the status of so called "XM entity" after he dead. Maybe the end form of human evolution is become exotic matter.
#2 The Shaper is only the guide that help human towards evolution and Shaper Glyph is only the tool that connect us towards XM. Shapers are not belong to the ultimate community.
And there is another great theory presented by Clarke in this book that worth mention. In this book, the guide is in fact a demon-look creature from outer space, and that comes for reason to the "demon-look", human treat demon as the symbol of death and misfortune is because that the "demon-look" guide is leading human towards extinction (and yet become another form of existence) and have the direct relationship to the death and "misfortune" of the last generation of human race, instead of doing the same thing to ancient human. This transcendental idea is so marvelous that it appears in many other literary works such as The Dictionary of Hazar . And it may also have its reflection in Ingress. But I have not read the two (or three) prequel books of Ingress yet, so I couldn't come up with a clear mind to that.
But of course, the topic of Ingress is much more than that, such as artificial intelligence, religion, historical conspiracy theories and human arts, it seems that the idea of Ingress world is mixed with multiple sources of materials (the role of Jarvis is like Jesus but he looks just like Kane of the Command & Conquer series and BTW the story of it is also a sort of similar to Ingress) and hence established a much complicated and realistic world.
